Litter tray tips for cats

Toileting problems are one of the most common behavioural issues reported in cats. One possible cause is an inadequate litter tray (in the cat’s eyes!).

Here are a few tips to provide the best litter tray conditions.

1) Always provide a tray, even for outdoor cats.  There are times when a cat may not be happy to toilet outside such as bad weather, illness or old age.  Maybe they can’t access their usual toileting site or got a fright when toileting outside.

2 )Provide 1 tray per cat in the household + 1 extra. This means there is always another option if one tray has already been used and helps prevent competition between cats in the same household.  Some cats just like to use a separate tray for a pee and a poo!

3) Place each tray in a separate, quiet location away from windows and doors. Cats can feel vulnerable whilst they toilet so don’t like to be disturbed. Avoid putting trays in busy rooms, such as the kitchen, and place them far away from the cat’s food and water bowls.

4) Make sure the tray is big enough for your cat to comfortably turn around in. If your cat is older, make sure they can still climb into the tray without discomfort. Some cats prefer open trays over hooded trays and vice versa. Give your cat options so they can choose.

5) Avoid using scented litters, litter tray liners or a plug-in air freshener nearby as these can actually put your cat off using the tray!

6) Scoop the trays daily and give them a thorough clean with new litter weekly.
